What does DTMR mean?

At divetorch we are taking each torch we stock and measuring its light output using a high quality light meter under controlled conditions and over a fixed distance. This reading we call the Dive Torch Meter Reading or DTMR, which we hope will enable customers to choose the correct torch for their requirements.
We will also be adding photographs of each torch beam to better aid this decision, particularly when considering different bulb types and reflector angles.

Points to note:
Different bulb types appear to react very differently with light meters, therefore the photographs should be used along with the DTMR for a full comparison.
These reading are of no use when comparing readings from other sources, as the distances and conditions used will not be similar.
The distance we chose for our readings are based on our own experience, but also take into account the need for a useful comparison reading. If the distance used is too small then all the reading become very high. If the distance is too long then there is too little difference and readings become less accurate.
The type of reflector used will also have a large effect on the meter reading. For example, a 50 watt narrow beam torch with an 8° reflector will concentrate the light on a point and will therefore give a much higher DTMR than the same torch with a wide angle, video type reflector of 90°. Again it is best to use the DTMR's alongside the photos before making your choice.
Interestingly, meter redings from the same torch but with different batteries can give different readings. For example, the Fa&Mi Power 50 and the rechargeable Fa&Mi EVO 50.
Lights with a single reflector such as H.I.D. or halogen can also give a significantly smaller but brighter "bright spot" and higher meter reading due to the beam being concentrated by one reflector on one point. LED torches which give out the same overall light but use several reflectors give less of a concentrated bright spot and usually a lower meter reading.
Again, best to use the meter readings in conjunction with the photographs to better aid your decision.

Which dive torch should I buy?

There is no easy answer here, it will depend on your requirements, what type of diving you do and the budget you have allocated to this item. A few of the main considerations are:
Burn time;
Required power and brightness;
Depth rating;
Required whiteness (colour temperature), particularly important for photographers and videographers;
Beam width;
Main or back-up torch;
With or without strobe signalling device;
Variable or constant power outout;
Emergency (LED) function;
External charging facility, etc.

What different types of dive torch are available from you?

Plastic, Polycarbonate or aluminium, halogen or xenon, Light Emitting Diode (LED) or High Intensity Discharge (HID), rechargeable or standard, Nickle Metal Hydride or Nickle Cadmium, Alkaline or Lead Acid, wide or narrow beam, constant beam, flashing or strobe.
(More brands will be added later).

What are the Pro's and Con's of each type of bulb?

Halogen are very cost effective and usually easily replaceable by the user. Bulb life is shorter than others, but this is not usually a problem as replacement bulbs are inexpensive. Many of these torches such as the Beaver Platinum or Astro, come with spare bulbs or a selection of bulbs to suit your next diving situation. Some, such as the Fa-Mi Superstar have user adjustable power output which can be adjusted during your dive to suit your required brightness and burn times.
These bulbs are not as efficient and burn at releatively low temperatures, approx. 3500 degrees centigrade, giving realatively lower burn times per AmpHour of battery, less distance underwater and lower colour reproduction. Many divers prefer the "warmer" colours given by this type of bulb.

L.E.D. bulbs are very cost effective and fantastically efficient, giving very long burn times, very long bulb life along with a high (cool) colour temperature, resulting in good distance underwater and good colour reproduction. Bulbs are usually difficult to replace, but with very long bulb life, often around 50,000 hours, this should not be a problem.

High Intensity Discharge (H.I.D.) are the most expensive and the most powerful, giving very high output with high efficiency and long burn times per battery AmpHour. Power output is sustained longer than their equivalent LED torches which diminishes with battery drain. Very high (cool) colour temperatures at or near 6000 degrees means good colour reproduction and greater penetration through the water. Bulbs are expensive which is not normally a problem given the long bulb life. However, bulb life can be prematurely terminated if the torch is accidentally dropped from a height onto a hard surface. So best not to throw your torch into the boat from the water!!

What are the Pro's and Con's of each type of battery?

The main consideration we feel is to choose a system which does not suffer from the "memory" effect, which basically shortens the useable life of the battery. Otherwise, the higher the battery Ah. to bulb wattage ratio, the longer the burn time without recharging will be.

Should I purchase a rechargeable Dive Torch?

We prefer rechargeable batteries in the interests of conservation. They are more expensive to purchase but work out more cost effective in the long term.
One common request is a torch that will last for two dives without recharging. If a high power torch is required, consider H.I.D. or one of the latest high power L.E.D. lights. Otherwise, balance power output with battery power, either by selecting a lower power bulb or choosing a variable output torch, such as the Fa&Mi Superstar.
Some torches, such as the Fa&Mi Power 40 LED torch come with 4 non-rechargeable AA batteries, however a rechargeable power pack is available. Check though, to see if the rechargeable batteries will give the same initial brightness as the non-rechargeable equivalent. Another option would be to purchase 8 rechargeable AA batteries and a charger, available from many stores. This option would give the ability to change batteries between dives as necessary, or have one set on charge and the other set in use. The new Fa-mi Evo 40 and Evo 50 torches are very good examples of rechargeable diving torches and are very popular.
